Hey There! Yes you! Let me as you a question! Aren’t you tired of business just as usual? Aren’t you tired of putting your life into different boxes?

Like there’s a work box, business box, friends box, coworker’s box, relationship box etc. We are used to so much compartmentalisation that sometimes if we go to a party and the host forgot to introduce us to someone we are not quite sure how to connect, what to say, what to do!

So, I say enough! Let’s unbox your life! Hear me out before you exit this page.

Because at TCV we aren’t scared of big ideas, of sounding a bit delusional or esoteric if it helps us create a more fulfilled life. However this means these ideas need a bit more clear elaboration.

At TCV we believe that the essential principle of business, of life, is to figure out a way in which you’re payed for playing. Then you don’t have to work a single day. Don’t work, Just Play!

Not your dream, not your passion but play. People often say chase your dreams but it’s too vague. It only works if you have a very conventional dream and there’s a clear cut path to achieve it. For example, if you say you want to be a police man or a doctor. There’s a straight forward path of how to make that happen.

But if you have a dream more unique than that let’s say in case of someone like Dr Martin Luther King Jr or Gandhi the path is not so well defined. In fact many carrers don’t have a very well defined path or entry points. So there’s a bit of an ambiguity with that piece of advice.

Following one’s passion is not a very useful advice either. Because what is mistaken as passion is obsession or excitement. This is something you can’t live without doing or you love to do or something that you find challanging or gives you thrill. However, the problem with this is that it’s intermittent.

For example a great musician can’t publish album after album every year. They need time to immerse themselves into the process and curate a self expression through music satisfying enough for to actually publish it. This is almost like their worship, they can’t do it half heartedly or it can’t be rushed. It just takes so much time and energy to create something that is just “wow” to you but still might not yield to any commercial value.

This is why we will never see another Chopin or Back or Satie even if they exist somewhere out there but we’ll see plenty of Taylor Swifts whose songs read like therapy and self help articles from pop culture magazines.

I have nothing against her. I am just saying that she’s found a way to commercialise her artform and one reason is that she’s accepted mediocrity. She has made a conscious choice to work with songwriters, producers and artists with proven formula for success. That’s what pop really is. It is giving people what they want. It is what sells.

And that is true in all sorts of arts or passion endeavours. And if you are truly passionate about something then it is really hard to consistently meet the people’s demand without feel like you’re selling your soul.

So, here I present you a better solution, find something that you can do, day in and day out without tiring yourself and still feeds your heart and soul.

Something that’s as easy as mindlessly flipping pancakes or making filter coffee. Something that comes so easy to you that other’s burn with envy “How does he do that!” but to you it is the most easy and obvious thing to do!

Once you find this thing and find a way to monetise this. You’ll realise it that true joy and fulfilment comes from ease and helpfulness. Something that comes so naturally to you that you can do it half asleep and yet it makes someone’s day or at least makes it a whole lot easier.

Furthermore this doesn’t drain much of your energy or mind so that allows you to have time and energy to pursue those passion or dreams or spend time with your lady friend making love etc.

To summarise, once again, the essential principle of business, of life, is to figure out a way in which you’re payed for playing.

And don’t think for one second that play is trivial. It’s not trivial. It’s most impressive. Think of the times when you see an athelete do something seemingly impossible with grace and effortlessness. Or a pianist or a violinist so immersed in the music that they’ve lost any sense of space and time.

Or even a physician diagnose a disorder and heal something in one prescription that other doctors couldn’t figure out in months. Or that college professor capable of explaining something with such lucidity and ease that for the life of you couldn’t understand it in school despite all the teachers and YouTube videos.

True mastery can be expressed when the right person is placed on the right job with the right set of tools. Such an individual is impossible to stop. Even an archangel can’t stand in his path. The whole universe begins to work for him. At that point work doesn’t remain work. It becomes a play, nay, it becomes a dance.

So, if you’re someone going through a period of transition in life, or you’re just starting out your career. Instead of trying to shove a round peg in a square hole take some time to ponder upon what you just read and ask yourself:

  1. What are the things that come most natural or easy to me?
  2. Which of these things I take for granted but others find them impressive, extraordinary or worthy of envy?
  3. Which of these can be monetised?
  4. Which one I can test out in the next 3 months.
  5. Test and repeat until you find the right fit.

Now it’s possible that you haven’t experienced enough things to discover this yet. In that case you need to start exploring different things. And slowly let the life lead you.

You would never wear a badly fitting tshirt out on a date, would you? And that is just for one evening. Then why would you be in a career where you don’t fit or rather don’t belong and waste away your potential instead of having a time of your life, with your most precious date? (Yourself, my darling; you’re the only person you’ll always have to live with, no matter what!)
